Australian Cycling - Interview with Dr David Martin, Sports Physiologist at the AIS

dave-martin-2010Australian cyclists are proud of the fact that their performances are consistently earning them a mention in sports news headlines. We can often read about one of our own arriving on or delivering his teammate on a prestigious dais. This certainly was not the case just 15 years ago.

So it can be said that Australian cyclists are and have been doing something right for a few years now. What has caused this surge in standard of Aussie cyclists?

Dr David T. Martin is a Senior Physiologist at the Australian Institute of Sport responsible for research activities and providing physiological support for AIS and Cycling Australia Programs. He has a great history working with Cycling in Australia since the early 90‘s.
David has been integral to success of Australian cycling over the past fifteen years and apart from his superior knowledge, brings his passion, enthusiasm and creativity keeping Australian cycling at the forefront of sports science and performance technology.

Rachel Neylan (www.rachelneylan.com) spoke with Dr. Martin to get a solid grounding on the evolution of SRM training in Australian cycling and how a hand crafted Australian cycling performance culture is currently powering forward.

Exercise Testing at SRM Germany: Interview with Mirco Smerecnik, Fokus:Diagnostik
Exercise physiologists discuss a large variety of methods for testing in endurance sports. Which kind of tests do you think create the most meaningful results?

srm-leistungsdiagnostik-laktatanalyse-1

That's correct, there are a lot of different methods. Normally the most important fact is to use a test that is sport-specific, and use multiple parameters for training optimization.

The most meaningful test in performance diagnostics is the spiro-ergometry. It is also called the "gold standard" of performance diagnostics.

Spiro-ergometry measures respiratory gases during exercise - especially oxygen and carbon dioxide. At the same time power, heart rate and blood lactate concentration are measured and recorded. You get an impression of the endurance capacity and the individual energy metabolism of each athlete.
Very important criteria for training optimization are for example maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism and thresholds and the total energy consumption (fat- and carbohydrate metabolism).

Interview with Sebastian Weber, Coach of Team HTC Columbia
htc-tourdownunder2010-greipPerfect start of the season: André Greipel wins three stages and the overall classement of Tour Down Under (photo by Tim de Waele www.tdwsport.com)

Mark Cavendish and André Greipel, the dominating sprinters of 2009, are both on the same team - Team HTC Columbia. For you as an exercise physiologist and coach this must be a highlight!

Yes, of course. It is really exciting to have the opportunity to work with these athletes, and also the "sprint train". This is especially interesting as an exercise physiologist.
The combination of lab testing and power measurement in races has provided a huge amount of important information about the abilities and demands of lead out riders.

Bookreview: "Challenge Race Across America"
raceacrossamericabuch1
Want to know how to survive a 4,800 km time trial? Climbing mountain passes over 3000m high, crossing desserts with temperatures above 40 degrees celcius (in the shade - but where is shade when you're on the bike)? Want to have fun while doing it, feel no pain, and finish with better performance data than when you started? Then you should read Dr. Michael Nehl's book „Race Across America" (sorry, it is not translated into English yet).

Dr. Michael Nehls‘ impressive book describes all aspects of the most demanding bike race: its history, standard strategies and sucessful alternative strategies, and a lot of tactical details, illustrated with beautiful photos by Uwe Geissler, publisher of „Tour" magazine.
Dr. Nehls is confident that nearly everybody could finish the Race Across America, if their strategy and tactics are optimized. This book is the proof. On 190 pages packed with information and pictures, you get an inside view of what it takes to be a RAAM-finisher.

You can order the book in our European Onlineshop or on demand in our Service Center in Colorado Springs (usa@srm.de).

Bookreview: "The Science Of Fast Cycling"

aerobuchlars-teutenberg-200

Thanks to results of materials science and computational fluid dynamics simulation progression in aerodynamics are still possible - even if the UCI creates new restrictions. This German speaking book shows and explains these developements along historical lines (www.ld-vlg.de/aerobuch.htm).
The author has collected facts and created a general overview about aerodynamics in cycling. Andreas Pooch is a well-known specialist and author of books about recumbent bikes.
His new edition of „Die Wissenschaft vom schnellen Radfahren" („The science of fast cycling") is now available and we had the possiblity for a short interview.
